New York Impressions Four -Museums - James Rosenquist

Wow! I had a rare treat yesterday. While I was at the MOMA, I walked into a small room filled with wall to wall paintings by pop artist James Rosenquest. He was there being interviewed for an art magazine. The article is suppose to be posted online next week. I will post a link to it once I find it. I had a wonderful opportunity to ask him some questions and he was very gracious.

"F-111" is 86 feet long and wraps around four walls and is extremely powerful to be immersed in these images.

Some details:

The interviewer asked Mr. Rosenquest about the spaghetti, and his response was that he found "spaghetti to be very sexy."

New York - Impressions Four - Museums part two

Yesterday I visited the MOMA, my favorite modern art museum. Over the years it has gone through many expansions and changes. It has a wonderful restaurant but I like the cafe even better! Museum restaurants are the my favorite places to eat lunch.

Presently there is a small drawing show where I found this treasure by Mark Rothko:

New York Impressions Four - Museums part one

I finally made it out this week to see some art.

This lovely drawing is in the stairwell of the Morgan Library. I wasn't able to see who the artist was. The Morgan library is a lovely museum in JP Morgan's home. http://www.themorgan.org/home.asp

They have different exhibits through out the year. He had at least three libraries in the house which you can see. In one of them is a vault where he kept his most valuable books.

The present exhibits include "Rembrandt's World," which consists of lovely dutch drawings done during the 17th century. Some of them are very small with intricate detail and I spent a long time looking at the lines and marks they used. A very enjoyable show.

My second most favorite place in New York is the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the first being of course -

Central Park.

I have photographed the Temple of Dendur many times as it is one of my favorite exhibits in the museum. Jacqueline Kennedy was responsible for it coming to the met.

These statues always put a smile on my face:

Every time I visit the Met I find more amazing things to look at it.
I moved on to the rooms of the 19th-20th century European Art where I saw some paintings that I had not seen here before:

Of course I was drawn to this painting "The Horse Fair;" Ms. Bonheur did a superb job of rendering many kinds of horses in different positions. This photo is just a detail from the paining.

There is a whole room filled with paintings by Camille Corot. What a treat to see the originals!

The Islamic wing at the Met opened last Fall. I found the architectural elements in the rooms stunning, especially this window:

This ceiling was in one of the rooms - because the room was so dark, the image is slightly out of focus:

New York Impressions Three - Snow in New York

It snowed last week-end - the city ghad between 2-3".

These were shot from my window:

These two photos are HDR done in the Nik HDR program.

The snow stands out more on the fire escapes and air conditioners.

White and color:

There is nothing like black and white. I love the patterns on these roof tops.

I am house bound as I have a cold so I took these photos through the window:

I love the lights at night of the buildings.

This is the view from my bathroom window. Not bad , eh?

This is a close in shot on some buildings (across from the UN) taken outside my bedroom window.

I played around with two additional photos of the above image but with different exposures and then made an HDR image with a program called photomatix.

You have lots of choices of styles with this program.

I liked both of these altered images. I would be curious to know which ones you like best of all three.

New York Impressions part one

I am in New York for most of January and I thought it would be fun to post photographic impressions of the city that I have been shooting with my point and shoot canon camera.

My favorite thing to do in New York is to walk around the city.

There are a few vistiges of Christmas left.

Walking along Lexington Ave, I came across these cute puppies in a pet store window. These are actually registered pups with the American Kennel Assoc and not from a puppy mill - I went inside to ask. They are so cute.

Double Trouble!

While I am here I am taking a drawing class at the Art Students League on 57th and 7th. Many years ago my grandmother studied there and when I was a child she was constantly talking about the place and the teachers; so it is an amazing experience for me to take a class all these years later. At some point I will take some photos of the school.

One night walking home from the league I photographed some store windows:

Last Small Stone of January

It has been a wonderful experience posting a photo with written words that were inspired by the River of Stones event. Usually I would see something and the words would come and then I would grab the camera, sometimes the words came as I was photographing and sometimes the words gelled more as I was looking at the photograph. Always I was strongly drawn to something to reflect on whether the words or the photo happened first didn't seem all that important as both processes were about reflecting and being inspired.

I have not posted anything in the past week although I do have some photos I shot but the business of life and people interfered with more reflection and uploading. Will post some of these at a later date.

I hope to post a photo and a small stone at least once a week from now on.

Text above is my stone for the day but I had to include this photo as I shot it this afternoon with my Canon point and shoot rather than with my Nikon. I am very impressed with the quality of detail. At some future date I will clean up the flash shadow. Everything on this blog is a work in progress.

I woke up this morning and there was an amazing amount of frost on the ground. As I walked around my frost covered yard, I came across this rose blooming in a pot...in freezing cold January. Nature does some marvelous things!

Creativity and Time

We all struggle to find time to do the things we love to do versus the time for obligations, work and family.
Since I have not posted since I started in April, you can see my creative time for this blog never happened. I had hoped to do some painting and drawing but most of my creative time went to photography and photoshop. I shot a lot of picture especially of a herd of pintos I adopted. You can see the images and posts on their blog at http://pointarenapintos.blogspot.com. In this paragraph there are germs for future posts and discussions regarding making time for creativity, photography as an art form, etc.

My resolution for this year is to be more creative with my art work, writing etc and to post regularly on this blog.Today, New Year's Day's creative post is written as I am participating in "a river of stones" project " a river of stones is an international project started by Fiona & Kaspa to encourage people to engage with the world through writing a short observational piece every day during January."

This is a blog for and about Creativity.

In the 80's I did my thesis on the creative process and I have been fascinated about it ever since. I am a photographer and an artist and sometimes I like to combine the two into mixed media.
This blog is where I will peroidically post images and discuss my creative process, sometimes it will be art related and other times I will focus on photography. The posts will be based on whatever I am working on at the time. I will also pass on information, quotes, books, links etc that I come across regarding creativity.

But more importantly I would like this to be a place for a dialgoue with all kinds of creative people about their work. So please leave comments and tell us about your creative process!

One of the formats that will also be posted here are interviews with various creative individuals. I have designed a questionaire and have already interviewed two artists, a writer, and a crafts woman. I will post sections from these interviews and future interviews from time to time. At some point I hope to edit the interviews and I would like to publish them either as an article or in some kind of book.

For my first post about a creative project of mine, I thought I would share with you how I made one of my logos.
Below is the logo I designed for my Photographic Art business. I created it in Photoshop and it is a composite of 3 separate photographs I took. I made a mask and used the gradient tool to combine the images. (It helps to make a note of what you have done and attach it to the image so you can check back later - which is what I just did.) Then I added the text - it was an adventure choosing from all the available fonts online for the logo text. It was great fun blending these images together and one of these days I would like to make a painting of it.
